A Letter to Governor Christie

chris-christie-lose-weightDear Gov. Christie,

I heard on the radio yesterday morning that you had decided, for your family’s sake, to lose weight and get healthy. Some speculate that the ulterior motive is that you are interested in running for President and that it is more of an image thing. I say, “Who cares!” Regardless of your motives for getting healthy and losing weight, it will be a life improvement and your family will thank you for it.

So I heard that you “secretly” had weight loss surgery (LapBand), and that maybe you were not necessarily wanting everyone to know it. Well the cat is out of the bag now, friend. Own it.  I can tell you from experience that trying to hide a weight loss journey has great potential for failure.  You WANT people to know so that they can encourage and motivate you.  Too many people try to hide it to their own detriment.  The community around you will support you in this endeavor and will help you succeed.

I know what it is like to wake up one day and realize that your days are numbered. And being a hundred pounds overweight meant that my days were most likely numbered much less than others my age.  I knew that losing weight would not only make me feel better about myself and make my clothes fit properly, it would add to the days I would have to spend with my wife and kids. I get it man. Who doesn’t want to stick around for their family? Who doesn’t want to stick around a bit longer, period.

You have a tough road ahead of you now, though. There will be days where you want to quit doing what it takes.  There will be days that you fall off the wagon.  But remember, this is about changing yourself for the better. And making a change that big is not easy. If it were, no one would be overweight.

I urge you to stick with the plan.  Push forward. Learn to eat better. Start moving more intentionally. Don’t just lose weight, get healthy.  Show your critics that you have what it takes. Show your admirers what character you have. You have a lot of eyes on you right now and your success has the potential to motivate hundreds of other folks to get healthy. I urge you to use your new found lease on life to the benefit of not only your constitutes and supporters, but the our overweight nation as a whole.

I am proud of you sir and I can’t wait to follow your weight loss journey and watch you succeed at this great endeavor.
Peace, love, and health to you.
