I will go ahead and warn you that I am under the influence of painkillers as I write this post. Therefore I am only mildly responsible for what may be said or left unsaid.
So here is the good news.
I am NOT going to die of a blood clot. Not today anyway.
I am not entirely sure what happened. I have had sore ribs all week. The pain sort of waxed and waned but never was too serious. But yesterday morning it felt more acute. I figured that I would tough through it and therefore I went surfing with my dawn patrol crew. When I was coming out of the water at one point though, I was having difficulty taking deep breaths. It hurt so bad that it was making me wince. But I am a rough-and-tough hardcore manly man, so I didn’t do anything about it.
Not only did I not do anything about it, I went to my kettlebell class like nothing was going on. I let Kyle, the instructor, know that I was having issues and he told me to take it easy. So I did what any red-bloodied American manly man would do. I overdid it.
This morning when I woke up I was in A LOT of pain. Like enough that I thought that I might actually have broken something. I could not take a deep breath and it hurt to move. So I did what any red-bloodied American manly man SHOULD HAVE DONE YESTERDAY and went to the doctor.
I told him what was going on and he asked the most logical question. Do you remember anything that might have caused an injury to your ribs?
I had one of those funny movie type moments where I flashed back to the previous weeks activities which included insane amounts of push-ups, kettlebell swings, wipe outs, and a 2 year old dropping a Hulk Hogan style leg drop from the top turnbuckle on me while I am still snuggled up in my bed. I told him that I could not think of any one instance where something happened, but that with all I had going on in my life it could have been just about anything.
That is when he said something that scared me. He told me that he want to take every precaution and make sure that it was not a blood clot in my lung.
Hmmm. That made things a little more serious in my book. I don’t know anyone that ever died of a bruised rib. Blood clots though? Yeah, that kills people.
Well luckily the CAT scan showed that there was not only no clots (is that a double negative?), there were also no fractures (triple). So there you have it folks. I have some how deeply bruised my ribs, but I am not going to die from it. But getting a little dose of mortality on a Saturday morning was not what I was expecting for the weekend.
Under doctors orders, I am to refrain from any heavy physical activity for about a week and he gave me some decent drugs. I am now following his directions and laying on the couch. It hurts to breathe but the meds make me not care about it as much.
Please forgive my lack of crushing calorie burns this week.
