Well. I completed the most challenging physical feat of my new life. I finished a 70.3 triathlon. I trained for 16 weeks. You guys followed me. You know what I did to get there. I toiled and I drudged. I trained and I trained. And now I am a triathlete. No one can ever take that away from me…
So what now? Where do I go from here?
I was having a bit of a bummer day last week while mulling it over. I reached this huge milestone. This incredible goal in which some people even told me that I shouldn’t or couldn’t do it. But now that I have gotten there, it seemed as though I was a bit lost on my direction. I will never be able to do my first Half-Iron tri again. Sprints are basically a heavy training day for me. Olys aren’t as big a deal as Halfs and I am in no shape to do a Full Iron. What do I do to keep pushing forward?
Then I got a text message from Jason, the one who ALWAYS fires me up about triathlon. He asked if I had seen the South Carolina Triathlon Series standings. I said no. He said, “Well you might want to check them out. You’re in second place in the State for Clydesdale!”
Holy ships…
Here is the link to the standings…
Now let me be honest here. It ISN’T because I am any good at triathlons. It isn’t because I am the best looking (although I think I probably take the top position in that regard…) And it sure as H-E-double-hockey-sticks isn’t because I deserve it. But the fact is I have participated in 2 races and everyone below me has only done 1. And that gives me the points to be in second place. Do what? The fat guy who can swim and bike, but not really run is number two in the State? You damn right I am. And I am going to own it.
So here is what I am thinking.
As long as I keep racing this year, then I will stand a good chance of staying in the top of the rankings. Think I can do it? I guess we shall see.
My next race is the Clemson Sprint Triathlon on May 11th. May the odds be ever in my favor…
Coming for you Mr Hank Hanna
You give a lot of people this same advice, so here goes it for you… You say “it sure as hell isn’t because I deserve it…” We’ll I think you. Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve already done two races this season when most have done one! You certainly do deserve it and should take any credit you can. You got off the couch, trained and did it. Congrats! You deserve it! 🙂
That’s awesome! Congratulations!
I also think that you deserve that recognition..you worked really hard for it! I know those feelings of being lost after hitting a goal but in a few days a new goal will surface and provide you with the inspiration to keep at it! Congrats on the standings, it IS a big deal!

To paraphrase Plutarch (with help from Hans Gruber): “When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer.”
It seems to me the answer is to moving forward is to keep doing what you are doing but do it faster.
Wow Dow.
What can I say, Die Hard is the best!
Good luck at Clemson (climpson, haha). It’s hilly as crap over there
