About Me

My name is Hank.

Being the fat guy has been my identity for quite some time.

I didn’t like being the fat guy. There have been times in the past where I hated myself. There were days when I literally thought that I would be fat until the day I died. And I also thought that, at the rate I was going, that day would come sooner than later. I feared that my wife would find me disgusting. I didn’t want my kids to grow up and become obese like me. I wanted to change. For their sake. For my own sake.

At my heaviest, I weighed 360 pounds. No one ever thought I actually weighed that much because I “carried it well.”  But no one carries 360 pounds well.

I had tried all of the crash diets, the miracle weight loss pills, the thing where you cut your leg off to lose weight (ok, not really) and I even thought about having bariatric surgery.

And then it happened. The epiphany that changed it all.

I woke one morning knowing what it was going to take to change my life in a way that I never thought possible. I was going to have to run my weight loss like it was a business.

I started counting calories.

I started exercising like it was my job.

I started making better food choices.

I started running.

I did my first triathlon.

I lost 100 pounds.

I became a triathlete and I even won the 2013 South Carolina Triathlon Series Rookie of the Year

I started reaching goals that I never thought were possible and I started doing things that were so far removed from my scope of capabilities that I am still shocked.  I am not finished with this journey yet. It is ever changing. But for the sake of my family and myself, I will never EVER go back to the way things used to be.

Even though the biggest part of my weight loss has happened, I hope that my story and these posts can be inspiration to you and can help spark the flame to make better decisions in you.
