Picking Myself Up Off the Ground

I think we all have our own personal Mount Everests to climb.  Losing over 100 pounds is currently mine.

Now I get to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

If losing 100 pounds is one of my Mount Everests then the  pull up bars at the gym are my Denali (formerly Mount McKinnley for you old schoolers). I have NEVER been able to do a pull up in my life.  I remember PE in elementary school.  We had physical aptitude tests, one of which was the pull up.  I was able to do the goose egg on that. Zero for those who don’t follow me. I remember having an open stair way outside of my apartment in college.  You could reach up and grab the bottom of the steps from the landing. My roommate Will could do a million pull ups.  I would try when no one was around. Goose egg.

Having never really trained with weights or anything, it is no surprise that I cannot pull over 300 pounds off of the ground.  It would be like trying to dead lift a dead bear. And trust me. I can tell you from experience that lifting dead bears is no easy task.  They are bulky and hairy and awkward.  But enough about that.  I want to be able to pull myself up before the sun sets on another year.  But this is not a challenge post.  This is a triumph post, right?  Well allow me to explain myself.

The gym has this really great pull up / dip machine.  Refer to the picture above.  This machine is cool because it has resistance settings.  Basically for people like me who cannot do pull ups on their own this machine has a bar that you can stand on and counter-weight settings.  This way you can stand on the bar and it will sink down but the counter weight helps you slightly when trying to pull yourself up.  This might not be a great description but trust me, it works.

On my first day at the gym, Amanda put me on the machine at full resistance and told me to do some pull ups.  I was like, yeah right.  But I hopped on and was able to do a set of five even though on 3, 4, and 5 she was helping by pushing the bar up for me.  So really I did two at full resistance. After that day I decided that I wanted to be able to do pull ups on that machine with NO resistance and with the bar folded up.

The triumphs come from the fact that I have been going to the gym for a month now and I have worked my way up to 4 sets of 5 pull ups at full resistance with no help.  It is a feat, but I can do it.  This may not be impressive to anyone who can do pull ups, but let me tell you friends, this is huge to me.
